The Cool Colonial

Welcome to the New House!

We have officially left The Cozy Cottage after 10 years and moved…just across the street! It’s true, we loved the neighborhood so much and didn’t want to leave but were hoping to land the unicorn of a slightly bigger house with a much bigger backyard right where we already lived and somehow managed to grab it. So now I formally am introducing you to the new house, which I’m calling The Cool Colonial.

Built in 1920, it’s a colonial with three bedrooms, 1.5 baths, a finished attic, usable basement space and the backyard we were hoping for – large, flat, lots of playing area and plenty of space for adults to hang and for us to host outdoor parties. As purchased, it’s all beige clapboard siding with a black front door, shutters and window flower boxes. The interior is all painted greige, white and gray, so it’s all around a very neutral house. It’s bigger than The Cozy Cottage (1,275 square feet) and is more than 1,400 square feet but with the basement is more than 1,600 square feet. Between the layout of the first floor, the overall larger size and the backyard of our dreams, it’s the perfect size for us and we’re hoping to love living in this home for 15-20 or more years to come.

First Floor

The first floor opens right into the living room, split between a fireplace on one side and room for a seating area on the other. From there, you walk straight into the dining room and kitchen. There’s a sunroom behind the fireplace that is flooded with light thanks to several large windows. Off the kitchen/dining area is a mudroom and then screened-in porch which leads to the driveway, garage, large backyard and paved patio area with built-in firepit.

Basement

The basement is semi-finished as in there is a drop ceiling and canned lights but otherwise, it’s pretty raw. The one powder room in the house is in the basement, as is the laundry area.

Second Floor

This is a standard second floor for this age of house – three bedrooms and one full bath. Bonus: We actually get a linen closet now!

Attic

There is a finished attic with storage and skylights, giving us another area to use as a home office and quiet hangout space.

The attic

The house is fine as is and we are falling in love with it immediately. It fits our immediate needs but we have plans to funk it up a little bit with our signature dose of color, pattern and quirk, as well as expand to create a primary suite on the second floor and a powder room on the first floor. All in due time, of course, as we just moved in. For now, we’re enjoying watching fireflies outside as we sit mosquito-free in the screened-in porch and having guests hang out on the first floor with ample room to spread out. We still can’t believe we were able to make it happen. After 10 years of living in and loving The Cozy Cottage, it’s so weird that we now have The Cool Colonial to call home!
