Design Takeaways from Italy

We recently spent a week in Italy, taking in the ancient ruins of Rome and the art of the Renaissance in Florence. Beauty was abundant and many details of design, architecture, landscape and materials have stuck with me.

Here are my top 5 design takeaways:
  1. Every doorway, passageway and threshold deserves its own definition. We saw many doorways trimmed with marble or beautiful sculptural pieces.
  2. Marble is nearly indestructible and beautiful in every application, whether it’s to further define a doorway, be carved into statues, or serve as stunning flooring.

3. I love when plants and flowers are used as part of the design and Europe does this well. All over Rome, fragrant wisteria wrapped and twisted itself over balconies and roofs, creating a stunning purple facade in bloom.

4. Floors and ceilings must be considered when designing a room, and not just in material.

5. Lean heavy into natural materials and feel free to mix patterns and materials to create a beautiful space full of texture and warmth.

Bonus: There’s always room for quirk.
