DIY Basement Playroom Makeover: Custom Shelves, Bright Paint, and Kid-Friendly Design
When we started talking about moving, the one thing our kid kept asking for was a play basement. Luckily, our new home had the perfect lower-level space to turn that dream into reality. As soon as we moved in, I set out to create an organized, functional, and personality-filled playroom—complete with a few DIY projects and plenty of color.
How Our Basement Is Laid Out
The basement is divided into two main areas:
- Front half: now the dedicated playroom
- Back half: a cozy TV room
We also have storage closets, a half bath, and laundry down here, but the two primary living areas are the playroom and TV space.
The front section—the future playroom—presented a challenge. It slopes down toward the sump pump and also contains our water shut-off valve and several pipes. That meant I needed practical solutions that worked with the uneven floor and utilities while still keeping the space cute and kid-friendly.

DIY Projects That Made the Playroom Functional
- Custom DIY Corner Shelves
I built custom plywood corner shelves to fit exactly around the water meter and exposed pipes. By designing them myself, I could control the length, height, and layout, ensuring we had storage that fit all of our kid’s toys without wasting a single inch of space.
- Adjustable Legs for the Sloped Floor
Instead of trying to build legs or buy premade wooden ones, I used adjustable legs. Each leg can be set to a different height, so the shelving stays perfectly level despite the sloping basement floor. This made a huge difference in stability and kept the entire unit looking intentional.
- Adding Bold, Happy Color
The basement was originally painted stark white—clean, but not playful. I wanted a burst of fun, so I painted both the shelving units and the lower half of the walls a bright, cheerful yellow. Painting the shelves and the wall behind them the same color helps frame the playroom and makes the space feel clearly defined from the rest of the basement.
- Cozy Decor for a Kid-Friendly Vibe
To make the space inviting for our child and his friends, I added:
- A soft rug
- Framed artwork
- String lights for warmth and whimsy
These small touches instantly made the room feel more like a hangout spot and less like a basement.

Creating a Fun Welcome at the Bottom of the Stairs
While most of the house was white, greige, or gray when we moved in, I’ve been slowly adding color back in. From the dining room, you can see straight down the stairs to the basement—yet you’d never know a fun playroom was waiting below.
To fix that, I painted large stenciled letters spelling “PLAY” at the bottom of the stairs using the same bright yellow as the playroom. Now, from the top of the stairway, you immediately sense the fun waiting downstairs.
I also added a fun rug to the stair treads (which you can see in the first photo) that matches the color scheme of bright yellow, black and white.

Future Plans: Bubble-Gum Skull Wallpaper
In our previous home, one of my favorite wallpapers featured a skull blowing bubble gum against a vibrant yellow background. I’ve been dreaming of using it again, and I think the playroom closet doors are the perfect spot.
The wallpaper is a bit of a splurge, so it’s on the future-project list. But the yellow paint I chose for the shelves and walls was inspired by it—and once I finally install the wallpaper, it will complete the space beautifully.
