How to Do Neutrals Well + Inspiration

I just wrote about how color will be everywhere but I don’t want to forget about about all my neutral lovers out there! Love an all-white room? Or beige or gray? Or even black? Creating a beautiful neutral space isn’t as easy as it looks, but, when done well, can be a showstopper.

There are several key tips for creating a well-done neutral space:

  • Varying wood and other organic tones
  • Several neutrals in the same palette, such as whites, creams or beiges, all peppered throughout the room
  • Plenty of texture through a variety of fabrics, textiles and upholstery to add depth
  • Metallics to help bounce light around and provide something to catch your eye
  • Hits of black throughout to help ground the space
  • Lots of natural light

You can read more tips on how to do neutrals well from the experts, here and here.

I know I talk so much about how much I love color, but I also really like a completely neutral space done well. In addition to the above list, my favorite neutral spaces all have several things in common: “color” brought in through natural materials, like wood, leather and greenery; lots of natural light; tall ceilings; and a mixture of just about every neutral – white, cream, wood, black, soft grays and beiges – within one room.
