How to Create a Retreat-Like Bedroom

Pinterest0

When I saw the above bedroom, created by interior designer Delia Kenza, I knew I had to talk to her. I saw it and immediately relaxed. The bedroom looks like a total retreat, away from noise, chaos and clutter, mentally and physically. So how does one create a retreat-like bedroom? Delia is sharing her top tips here.

Q. What do you look for first when designing a master bedroom?

A. I first speak with my client about their goals. Do they want a space that is light and airy or dark and moody or something in between? Then I look at the space to see what it has to offer architecturally.

Q. What makes a master bedroom look and feel like a retreat?

A. I think a master bedroom should feel luxurious. Invest in good bedding. It should have different types of lights – task light, reading light and all lighting should be on dimmers.

Q. Must a bedroom have a lot of space and natural light to be a retreat? What can people with small spaces do to create a getaway in their bedrooms?
A. The size and the amount of room should not dictate how the space should feel. The size and space should be used to enhance the feel. For example, a small room could be treated like a nook and using color and texture is a way to achieve that. If I want to make a smaller room feel cocoon-like, I will paint the whole room, trim and ceiling all in one color.

Q. What do you think people get wrong when designing their master bedrooms?

A. I think scale. Often times, side lamps are too small or furniture all matches. I think a bedroom, like other parts of the home, should have character. So having different pieces/types of furniture is best. Also, side lamps can have impact, so don’t be afraid to go big and bold.

Q. Any other tips on designing and decorating a master bedroom retreat?

A. Have fun with it. Keep in mind how you live, and invest in pieces you love. Be patient, it can be trial and error.

About RAD Home & Interiors

RAD Home & Interiors is a blog about making a house a home through decor, DIYs, design, renovation and occasionally cooking. I started this blog in 2015 as The 256 Project – a nod to the first house we bought – as a way to express my creativity and passion for all things interiors. For more than 10 years, I have been interviewing home experts about design and art, sharing DIY projects and design and renovation updates on our own home. Occasionally I share recipes I've recreated from my Haitian grandmother’s scripted notes.
